There has been renewed interest in gut-resident T cells (G-T cells) over the past few years due to their multiple roles in maintaining the gut immune system homeostasis. This short review summarizes recent advances in our understanding of G-T cells and their emerging role in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Introduction {#sec1-1} ============ IBD is a chronic inflammatory disease of the gastrointestinal tract. In particular, Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) have been identified as two common and distinct forms of the disease. The pathogenesis of IBD is associated with a complex interaction between genetic, environmental, and immune factors.^[@ref1]^ CD is characterized by transmural inflammation that can affect any region of the gastrointestinal tract, whereas UC is associated with a relapsing-remitting pattern of inflammation confined to the mucosa.^[@ref2]^ The precise etiology and pathogenesis of IBD remain unclear, but it has been proposed that the mucosal immune system plays a key role in the initiation and maintenance of these immune-mediated inflammatory conditions. The discovery of a role for G-T cells in the intestinal mucosa is an exciting development in our understanding of IBD.^[@ref3]^ G-T cells {#sec2-1} --------- The gut immune system functions to protect the host from pathogens while maintaining tolerance to commensal antigens. Various subsets of G-T cells have been identified that have distinct roles in maintaining gut homeostasis. One such subset of G-T cells includes a population of γδ T cells that are predominantly found in the lamina propria.^[@ref4]^ G-T cells can be further classified into four subsets based on their expression of CD4 or CD8α: CD4+ T cells (T~H~
